Surface Soil Moisture Retrieval from Envisat/asar Ap Observations Combining Two Backscattering Models

چکیده
Radar based surface soil moisture retrieval has been subject of intense research during the last decades. However, the space-borne radar sensors available so far provided single configuration observations where the influence of surface roughness frequently caused the solution of the backscattering process to be ill-posed. The ENVISAT/ASAR sensor offers new perspectives since the alternating polarization (AP) mode acquires two simultaneous observations in different polarizations. However, the benefits of the AP mode for surface soil moisture retrieval are still unclear. In this paper a methodology proposed by Pauwels et al. [1] is adapted to ENVISAT/ASAR AP observations. The methodology combines two backscattering models and provides an estimation of the roughness and moisture of the soil surface. The results obtained show that the soil surface conditions and sensor configuration significantly affect the estimations, thus, the approach lacks robustness and cannot be generalized to any situation.

The Retrieval of Soil Moisture from Envisat/asar Data
In order to verify the possibility of estimating soil parameters by means of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images at C-band, an experimental campaign was carried out in two agricultural areas in Italy (Alessandria and Montespertoli) during ENVISAT/ASAR passages and the results obtained after a preliminary data analysis are described in this paper. First of all, a classification of the Alessand...
متن کامل5 Years of Envisat Asar Soil Moisture Observations in Southern German
Soil moisture is a key variable for the water and energy exchanges at the land surface. The determination of soil moisture dynamics from space is one of the most prominent, but also most challenging applications for recent active microwave sensor systems. Since the launch of ENVISAT ASAR, more than 4 years of data is available for the retrieval of soil moisture information. The wide area covera...
متن کاملEstimation of surface soil moisture and roughness from multi-angular ASAR imagery in the Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research (WATER)
Radar remote sensing has demonstrated its applicability to the retrieval of basin-scale soil moisture. The mechanism of radar backscattering from soils is complicated and strongly influenced by surface roughness. Additionally, retrieval of soil moisture using AIEM (advanced integrated equation model)-like models is a classic example of underdetermined problem due to a lack of credible known soi...

In this paper, a technique that is able to retrieve soil moisture maps in areas at risk of flood from ENVISAT/ASAR images, based on a Neural Network approach, was tested. Some experimental trials were carried out in 2003 and 2004 in the agricultural area of the Scrivia watershed in northern Italy, simultaneously to the ASAR passes. This area is susceptible to flooding and has a dense hydrometri...

8 Abstract 9 This paper focuses on different methods for estimating soil moisture in a Sahelian environment by comparing ENVISAT/ASAR and ground data 10 at the same spatial scale. The analysis is restricted to Wide Swath data in order to take advantage of their high temporal repetitivity (about 3–4 days) 11 corresponding to a moderate spatial resolution (150 m). On the one hand, emphasis is put...
